Initiatives for the SDGs
What Are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the successors to the Millennium Development Goals, which were formulated in 2001. They are a set of international targets to be achieved between 2016 and 2030, put together as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015. The SDGs comprise 17 goals and 169 targets to achieve global sustainability, and pledge to leave no one behind.

1. Provision of Advanced Logistics Solutions

Mixing freight and passengers business
Recently, there has been an increase in mixed freight and passenger transport predominantly in rural areas. In addition to enabling increased transport and delivery efficiency by bringing passengers and cargo together, mixed freight and passenger transport is expected to help maintain traffic infrastructure in regions facing population declines, with the added benefit of reducing environmental impact by cutting CO2 emissions from truck-based transport.
Sagawa Express has formed outsourcing agreements with regional rail, bus, and taxi companies and begun creating new transport networks. Not only has this helped maintain traffic infrastructure in regional areas and reduce environmental impact, it is also reforming employee workstyles and streamlining operations.

Facility logistics systems
At Sagawa Express, we offer a facility logistics system which enables centralized management of people, goods, vehicles, information, and facility maintenance in large-scale commercial complexes and office buildings that house numerous companies.
This system enables smooth loading and unloading of cargo through management of delivery vehicles, transport routes, entry/exit of logistics personnel, and operation adjustment of cargo elevators, and more. Moreover, controlling the movement of delivery vehicles can ease congestion around the facility and reduce exhaust emissions (CO2, PM, etc.) from idling vehicles.

As a logistics provider responsible for supporting social infrastructure, we are striving to provide high-quality logistics services in tandem with our customers and partner companies. Through the establishment of the advanced logistics project team GOAL® (GO Advanced Logistics), in which we play a leading role, we are bringing together the diverse functions of SG Holdings Group companies, and working to propose optimal logistics solutions to our customers. By expanding our range of proposals and growing our logistics infrastructure, we continue to create new value for logistics and to develop services to please our customers.

This service shortens lead times and optimizes costs by completing certain procedures overseas, including inspection, needle detection, picking, and attachment of domestic delivery invoices

2. Traffic Safety

As a transportation business provider, Sagawa Express owns approximately 26,000 vehicles and uses public roads for its operations. With "Safety over everything" as our underlying theme, we strive to reduce traffic accidents on a daily basis. For new employees, we offer training programs such as Basic Safe Driving Training, which covers the basic safe driving guidelines that are fundamental to driving and safety checks. We have introduced an in-house license system, while we have also reinforced our tangible measures, including the provision of safety assistance devices. In these and other ways, we are constantly working to reduce traffic accidents. We also regularly hold Truck Driving Championships, aiming to raise awareness of traffic safety and improve driving etiquette.

3. Diversity & Inclusion (D&I)

Through the establishment of Service Centers that collect and deliver cargo using carts and bicycles, as well as the introduction of swap-body vehicles, Sagawa Express is increasing opportunities for women to play an active role. Swap-body vehicles are able to connect and disconnect their cargo beds and vehicle bodies from one another, making it possible to separate driving and cargo handling operations. This allows female drivers to focus on driving with peace of mind. In this way, we are working to improve the workplace environment to grow into a company where employees can work with vitality and enthusiasm, thereby promoting employment, retention, and diversity.

4. Circulation of Resources

At Sagawa Express, uniforms worn by SALES DRIVER® are Eco Mark certified as they are made from polyester which has been made using recycled PET bottles. Short-sleeve uniforms contain the equivalent of six 500 ml PET bottles, while long-sleeve uniforms contain eight. Further, used uniforms that have not seen much use are reused. Uniforms that are difficult to reuse, meanwhile, are recycled into fuel for steel manufacturing.
Recently, the impact that plastic waste is having on marine pollution and marine ecosystems is becoming a global problem. To play our part, we will continue to promote the circulation of resources to help reduce plastic waste.

5. Climate Change

Global efforts are underway to cut GHG (CO2) emissions to zero by 2100 to eliminate the main cause of climate change.
At Sagawa Express, of our approximately 26,000 vehicles, around 16,000 (as of March 31, 2023) are environmentally friendly (compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, hybrid vehicles, EVs, clean diesel vehicles, etc.).
Elsewhere, we are promoting a modal shift to using rail and sea transport. Compared to trucks, transportation using rail generates just 1/10th the amount of CO2, while sea transport generates just 1/5th.

6. Forest and Biodiversity Protection

At Sagawa Express, we are engaged in forest protection activities at the Forest of Takao 100 years, a forest we own in Hachioji-city, Tokyo, as part of our efforts to protect and coexist with the environment.
Satoyama areas are carbon sinks for the CO2 emissions from our truck operations. Our long-term vision is to restore satoyama areas that can help prevent global warming and that facilitate coexistence between people and nature, and we are moving forward with the relevant initiatives.
We are also working to develop environmental personnel, such as by hosting experience-based nature classes for children of the next generation.
Details on our protection activities and experience-based nature classes can be found on the website.

7. Resilience

At Sagawa Express, we have concluded disaster relief agreements, comprehensive partnership agreements, and monitoring agreements with our communities, and are contributing to safe, secure community development.
Our activities include the delivery of emergency relief goods in times of disaster, participation in local governments’ disaster preparedness training programs, the promotion of distribution of regional products, the promotion of tourism, and community monitoring for children and the elderly. Working with communities and utilizing our mutual strengths, we are rolling out activities that contribute to regional revitalization.
